Kenton Whatcasts?

Podcasts. The name is a combination of two words:

iPod is the proprietary name of Apple's MP3 player. An MP3 player is like a small Walkman. You plug headphones into it, press play, and enjoy in glorious stereophonic sound your favourite performances of Beethoven, Dave Brubeck, Steely Dan or Green Day.

Broadcast is the publication, usually through radio, of media such as music and talk shows. These are usually scheduled regularly so that people who want to listen to them know when to tune in.

So, a podcast is the broadcasting of a talk or music show or other audio media in the form of a regularly updated MP3 file on a website.

An MP3 file can be downloaded to your computer and can be copied to another computer, emailed and linked to on websites. Instead of a document you read, like a Word file, MP3 files are audio files which you play through either your computer's speakers or a set of headphones. To download the MP3 file you use podcatcher software, which is a program you install on your PC. There are several free programs of which iTunes is probably the most well known although a quick web search will find you others.

Subscribing to a podcast might vary between software, but you will normally need to click on a podcast feed then follow the intstructions with the program to find out how to download and copy the MP3 file to your MP3 player.
