About Us

Kenton School is an 11-19 Academy, situated on Kenton Lane in Newcastle upon Tyne.

It is one of the largest schools in the north of England, with 2010 places, including 300 in the Sixth Form.

It opened in 1960 as a City of Newcastle maintained comprehensive school, but chose to convert to academy status in 2012.  In 2014 it formed a multi-academy trust (Kenton Schools Academy Trust), which then opened Studio West, a new studio school, in West Denton in 2014.

Kenton School has been inspected five times by Ofsted. The most recent inspection was in 2019.

School opening

Kenton School was officially opened on Friday, 17 March 1961 by Lord Morrison of Lambeth. The opening ceremony included hymns, speeches, prayers and the national anthem! After the ceremony, visitors were invited to 'inspect' the school.

Kenton School was a lot different compared to how it is today!

These images and insights have been put together from the original opening ceremony programme. If you would like more information on this, you can download the Kenton Secondary School Opening 1961 (PDF).

Leading the Way

At Kenton we are passionate about providing the very best education possible for young people in our city, our region and nationally. On a daily basis we have the opportunity to work with learners from a variety of backgrounds but we believe that our responsibility extends beyond those learners who are enrolled at our school and that we should be sharing our knowledge and expertise as widely as possible.

Our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) actively seek out new opportunities to work with colleagues from other schools and other sectors to enhance educational provision for young people. Indeed, many of our SLT hold a Governor position within local primary schools. We have also been privileged enough to have been to asked contribute to a variety of different projects and initiatives.

Whether it's organising teach meets, leading life changing trips for learners, contributing to national publications or just offering advice on a 1:1 basis with colleagues beginning their career in education, we know our outstanding team are doing all that they can to help shape the educational landscape.
