What is the course structure?

BTEC Firsts in Performing Arts can help you take your first steps towards a career onstage or behind the scenes. You'll learn essential skills such as acting, stage management, production and set design.


You will go on visits to the theatre to see plays, work with professional actors and directors, and read and learn about different styles of play from different times and cultures. The course is made up of one core unit and two specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth.

What will I study?

Mandatory Units

1. Individual Showcase

This unit covers what to include in a letter of application and how to prepare audition pieces or presentations that demonstrate your relevant skills and knowledge.


Learners will need to select and respond to one of the given progression opportunities.


The skills required for the selected progression opportunity will include the following performance skills:


  • vocal/physical expression

  • clarity of delivery

  • focus

  • confidence

  • control

  • communication of creative ideas and intentions


In this unit you will:


  • understand the skills required for the selected progression opportunity

  • present a self-promotional response to the selected progression opportunity

2. Preparation, Performance and Production

In this unit you will learn how to develop a performance piece as a member of a fictional performance company. You will take on a specific performing or production role and will prepare for, and produce, a performance by carrying out tasks that are appropriate to your role. No matter what role you undertake, you will also need to explore the performance piece you are working on.


Learners will take part in preparations in a defined performance or production role.


Learners may undertake one or more of the following roles:


  • performance, for example a dancer, actor, singer, musician

  • production design, for example lighting, sound, costume, props, makeup, masks, set

  • production technical, for example lighting, sound

  • production construction, for example costume, props, makeup, masks, set

In this unit you will:


  • take part in the preparations for a live performance

  • demonstrate performance or production skills and techniques in a performance.

Optional Units


3. Acting Skills

This unit is about building your foundations as an actor; it is not just about performance. As well as undertaking a programme of practical classes to develop your physical and mental acting skills, you will be required to demonstrate progress throughout the unit.

In this unit you will:


  • explore and develop your acting skills and review your own practice

  • use your acting skills within rehearsal and performance
